Lightning Train - a staged reading - by Barbara Bryan
August 14, 2010 at 8pm
FREE - through Station North Second Saturdays

Picture
Lightning Train is a play about the American imagination and improvisation. In 1843, three African-American businessmen harnessed a confluence of new technologies – Pennsylvania’s growing network of the earliest railroads, the spread of newspapers, and the invention of the telegraph and early photography. Working with railroad employees and abolitionists, they imagined how they might facilitate the more rapid transport of people fleeing slavery. And then, despite threats all around, they began moving people to freedom by train.

About the Playwright: Barbara Bryan  is a Baltimore playwright whose work has been performed at theaters across the U.S. Her plays have been finalists for the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, PlayLabs and the Heideman Award from Actors Theatre of Louisville. She received Playwright Grants from Baltimore City Arts and Maryland State Arts Council and participated in the Kennedy Center Summer Playwriting Intensive. She has developed plays in Paul Berman’s Theater Workshop in Baltimore and is a graduate of Trinity College, Washington, D.C.

About the playwright:

Picture
After graduating from Boston University with a degree in finance, Obie Sims decided to leave the amazingly fun world of spreadsheets and number crunching to try his hand at something more stable - like becoming a movie star. With just enough belongings to fill his 1992 Isuzu Amigo, Obie, a Maryland native, headed west to pursue his dream of becoming a working actor. Despite many barriers and heartaches, he steadily pushed on.

Under the intense instruction of Robert Carnegie and Jeff Goldblum at Playhouse West Repertory Theatre, he went on to not only land national commercials for such companies as “Dodge”, “Nokia”, “AT&T”, and “Applebees”, he has also booked roles on such hit shows as "The Wire", “Law and Order: SVU”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “House M.D.”, "Charmed", and “Medium”. He plans on continuing to live and breathe his passion for the arts, which brings us to a one man show he created to uplift, motivate and inspire us to keep pushing on.

The Ladies of Libraryland
Written by Ronda Cooperstein
June 17 - 19, 2010 at 8pm

Picture
Midtown librarians Charlotte and Lillian find their work world threatened when an imposing new manager takes over the branch.

Meet the Playwright: Ronda Cooperstein

Picture
Ronda Cooperstein is a playwright living in Baltimore with two dogs, two cats, two sons, and one father.  Several of her plays have been selected for production, and others have received staged readings.  Her play, JUANITA BLOOM, won the Baltimore Playwrights Festival best play and best production awards in the year 2000.  She is grateful to all of the local theaters that have given her the opportunity to share her work, and to the many people who have showed interest in her stories.

PLAYWRIGHTS NOTE: Librarians, the salt of our civilization, are rarely acknowledged and often misunderstood.  How may citizens take time to consider the whirlwind of work librarians do each day, much of it in backrooms and behind closed doors?  Do people realize that librarians are far more than a pit stop on the way to a bookshelf or computer station?  Do parents understand that the librarian telling the story to their small child really IS a fairy godmother (or godfather)?  THE LADIES OF LIBRARYLAND is one playwright's tribute to the librarians of the world.  She also happens to be a librarian.

How I Learned to Eat Pussy
Written by Kate Bishop
June 10-12, 2010

Picture
How I Learned to Eat Pussy (HILTEP) is a one-act play that explores one woman’s first sexual experiences. Written as a monologue in four voices, the characters are all aspects of a single person: not multiple personalities, but rather lenses through which the individual's experiences are created, perceived, and interpreted. These dimensions of her personality may clash with one another, but all fondly recall a series of sexual discoveries in their own way. Sexual and queer themes, including explicit descriptions of heterosexual and lesbian sex expressed with blunt language, are at the heart of the play.  The world premiere of HILTEP was produced by the Whisper to a Scream feminist performance art collective, directed by Maura Haas, at Cleveland Public Theater, January, 2010.  The performance at the Strand Theater marks the first staging of HILTEP in Baltimore.

Meet the Playwright: Kate Bishop

Picture
Kate Bishop is a social worker, sex educator, theater dabbler and vaginal enthusiast.  A Pittsburgh native, Ms. Bishop spent her young adulthood in Cleveland until moving to Baltimore four years ago.  She has a Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies from Hiram College and a Masters in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University. Ms. Bishop's professional work has centered on jobs which allow her to talk about the vagina, including abortion clinic counselor, rape crisis advocate, pelvic exam instructor, and phone sex operator.

Ms. Bishop's performance experience follows her pathological longing to wear a costume every few weeks.  In Baltimore, she has appeared as a Gnome (2008), Butterfly Witch (2009), and Bon Voyage Fairy (2010) in the Transmodern Festival, performed in original theater works by Theresa Columbus at Load of Fun and the 14 Karat Cabaret (2007), gave sexpert advice with Annie Sprinkle at Maryland Institute College of Art (2009), and appeared numerous times on stage in the Charm City Kitty Club at the Creative Alliance (2007 to present).

A compulsive crafter, Ms. Bishop has recently become obsessed with making needle-felted vaginas to sell from her dusty corner of the internet (www.lunacycle.etsy.com) She is active as a volunteer for NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland, a member of the Charm City Kitty Club queer performance collective, a Friend of the Maryland Film Festival, and plants bulbs with the Friends of Mt. Vernon Place.  She lives with Tori McReynolds, her sweetheart of nine years, in Mt. Vernon.

The XX Chromosome Genome Project
Written by S. Ann Johnson
Directed by Alvin E. Ford Jr.

Picture

Meet the Playwright:

Picture
In 2007, I starred as “The Lady in Red” in the Penn State University No Refund Theater production of Ntozake Shange’s hit Broadway choreopoem For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. Inspired by Shange’s powerful poetry, I embarked on a nearly 2-year journey to create a choreopoem of my own. The end result: The XX Chromosome Genome Project! (FYI: A choreopoem is a dramatic work that combines poetry and choreography)

I’m a feminist at heart, and I believe that women ought to stick together. We all go through the same struggles that are unique to women. So, my main purpose of writing The XX Chromosome Genome Project was to elucidate that although we may look different on the outside, we have a lot in common on the inside.

The idea for titling my choreopoem The XX Chromosome Genome Project came after reading literature about a 13-year-long, governmental-research study called The Human Genome Project. In this literature, I found that the genetic structure of human beings is 99.9 percent identical. For the purposes of The XX Chromosome Genome Project, I decided that I’d call the 0.1 percentage point difference between us “Flavor.” Each ethnicity in my choreopoem is represented by a woman of a different “Flavor” based on origin, color, and characteristics.” African American is Chocolate, Caucasian is Vanilla, Asian American is Lemon, Native American is Cinnamon, Mixed Heritage is White Chocolate, and Latina is Caramel.

I decided to submit my play to Strand Theater Company’s Friends and Neighbors Festival: Works by Women simply because I had work, I’m from Maryland, and I’m a woman (I met the general qualifications, basically). The XX Chromosome Genome Project was my first shot as a playwright, and I am forever grateful that Strand Theater Company believed in and accepted my work. In the writing industry, rejection is so common. My work has been rejected countless times by countless publishing houses, agents, you name it. So, when I received a congratulatory email from the Strand Theater Company, I was beyond ecstatic. I was so jaded by those previous rejection letters that I didn’t anticipate receiving an acceptance letter. I guess good things happen when you least expect it.

Open House: Celebrating Community

The Strand Theater Stakes Its Claim in Local Community Theater!

The Strand Theater will mark its second anniversary with Open House: Celebrating Community. During its short tenure, the Strand has seen great success, producing eight full-length season plays, all of which were Baltimore premieres. With a focus on community, the Strand has made its mark by providing affordable theater space to over 15 organizations, serving more than 5,000 patrons, and playing an integral role in the revitalization of the Station North Arts & Entertainment District.

The annual Open House is the Strand’s largest fundraising effort of the year. Proceeds from the Open House will go towards securing script rights for next season, developing a promotional brochure and performance playbills, and the purchase of new lighting equipment and sophisticated box office hardware.

Open House: Celebrating Community will begin with an hour dedicated to families. Children will be invited to participate in the creation of a mural on the Strand’s interior wall. Also during “family hour,” face painters, clowns and balloon artists will delight the children, while parents can enjoy drinks in the courtyard. At 5:00 p.m. the Strand will turn the stage over to singer/songwriter ellen cherry, who is the talent behind the recently featured commercial on FOX45: We are Baltimore. At 6:00 p.m., see a short and sweet 20-minute re-cap of the entire 2009-2010 Strand season featuring the same actors who performed throughout the year. At 6:30 p.m. Ian Jones will take the stage with his pseudo-psychedelic rock stylings, last seen at the Wind Up Space’s New Year’s Eve Bash. To close the evening, Kate Guntermann, who was the highlight of last year’s Open House and always delights, will eat fire in the back courtyard. Free refreshments (food and alcohol), donated by local restaurants, will be available throughout the event. Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and can bid on everything from headshots to dinner certificates to a wine tasting to Strand paraphernalia.
